Gwo-Bin Lee received his B.S. and M.S. degrees in Department of Mechanical Engineering from National Taiwan University in 1989 and 1991, respectively. He received his Ph.D. in Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering from University of California, Los Angeles, USA in 1998. Dr. Gwo-Bin Lee was a Distinguished Professor in the Department of Engineering Science at National Cheng Kung University, Taiwan from 2008 to 2011. He was a Distinguished Professor in the Department of Power Mechanical Engineering at National Tsing Hua University from 2011-2014. Currently, he is a Chair Professor in the Department of Power Mechanical Engineering at National Tsing Hua University. He is also an Adjunct Professor at Institute of Biomedical Engineering and Institute of NanoEngineering and Microsystems at National Tsing Hua University. His research interests are on nano-biotechnology, micro/nanofluidics and their biomedical applications. He is the directors of MEMS Design and Microfabrication Lab and Microfluidic Biochips Lab. Dr. Lee has been very active in the field of micro/nanofluidic systems, and has developed integrated micro/nano systems incorporated with nano/biotechnology for biomedical applications. He has developed several micro/nano-scale platforms for cell, protein, and DNA manipulation and detection. Dr. Lee has published over 250 journal papers (including 230 SCI journal papers), 350 conference papers, and filed 130 patents (73 patents granted). His works have been highly cited over 5350 times in the past 15 years. His H-index is 41 now. He was elected to be the Fellow of Society of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics, Taiwan in 2011. He was also the elected Fellow of ASME and CSME in 2013.

Research Synopsis

Professor Lee has made substantial impacts in developing micro/nanofluidic integrated systems for biomedical applications. He has developed several micro/nano-scale platforms for cell, protein, and DNA manipulation and detection. His team was the first one to demonstrate integrated microfluidic system to perform the entire process, including sample pre-treatment, cell lysis, DNA/RNA extraction, nucleic acid amplification and optical detection on a single chip such that the automatic, fast diagnosis of infectious diseases can be realized. This integrated system has established Professor Lee as a leading international figure in the field of microfluidics since 2004.

Professor Lees contributions are not only limited to integrated microfluidic system. He also plays a leading role in developing microfluidic devices including micropumps, microvalves, microfilters, microswitches and micrmixers.  In the past 10 years, he published a series of high impact papers in this area. For manipulating a small amount of fluids in microchannels, these devices have been demonstrated as promising tools to automate the transport, separation and dispension of the fluids.  Since his work has been highly recognized in this field, Professor Lee has received over 4000 citations in the past 10 years. His h-index is 39. Six of his papers have been ranked as highly cited papers, according to ISI Web of Science. Five of his works have been cited over 100 times in the past ten years.

Another one of Prof. Lees world-class innovations is his work on combination of micro and nanotechnology. For instance, he demonstrated that microfluidic systems can be used to automatically synthesize nanoparticles with different shapes due to their flexibility and excellent controbility.  Another example is that he demonstrated that nano-scaled magnetic particles can be used for sample pretreatment when incorporated with microfluidic devices such as micro-incubators and micropumps. With this approach, the extraction and purification may be significantly enhanced due to higher surface-to-volume ratio inherent to nanoparticles.
